Eat Cookies and Stay Fit!

There’s no one more excited for summer than this guy:

This is Stephen. You may not know him (yet), but here are some things that you need to know about him:

  • He loves summer
  • His biggest role model is Madonna
  • He is a fitness instructor in one of the city’s top gyms
  • He’s got an incredible mustache
  • He’s got an incredible fit body
  • He eats LOTS of baked goods.
  • And he still get an incredible fit body

  • It may sound a little suspicious, but it’s all true!
That is because he’s also the founder of The Protein Bakery, one of the healthiest bakeries in NY, according to Well and Good. All their cookies, brownies and blondies are gluten-free (made with mainly oat flour) and enriched with whey protein. Their recipes have only natural ingredients, they are trans-fat free, gluten-free, and preservative-free, wheat flour-free, and fiber-rich but still taste like cookies and brownies, and not like...well, paper.

Perfect for those who are fitness fanatics but love a sweet snack and the ones that are trying to get there!

If now that you got to know a little more about Stephen, you really feel like having a nice chat with him about Madonna or mustaches, you can stop at The Protein Bakery’s shop, West 19th St, Chelsea, NY. Or, if you just feel like ordering their delicious healthy goods, head to the Sweetist website and let us deliver to you! :)

Here’s a picture of Stephen, his incredible mustache, and a nice lady <3

5 Pies to Celebrate National Pi Day with in NYC

Happy National Pi(e) Day! Sweetist is here to help you celebrate with some of the best pies in New York City. So without further ado, here’s our list of the best pies for you to shove in your piehole this National Pi Day.

    1. Little Pie Company Sour Cream Apple Walnut Pie

While none of the pies from Little Pie Company disappoint, our favorite (and their bestseller) is the Sour Cream Apple Walnut, layers of thinly sliced apple all topped with a crunchy, crumbly brown sugar walnut streusel.

And for the entire week of Pi Day, if you buy a large pie in store, you’ll get a free sugar cookie shaped like the Pi symbol. So what are you waiting for? Go check them out!

(or if you’re too lazy to move, get one delivered here)

    Little Pie Company / @eatdrinknomad

    2. Four & Twenty Blackbirds Salted Caramel Apple Pie

Four and Twenty Blackbirds offers up a twist on the classic apple pie with their Salted Caramel Apple Pie. This slice features an apple filling with a barely there touch of caramel, topped with a flaky crust studded with coarse salt. Make sure to ask for some of their homemade whipped cream on the side!

    Four & Twenty Blackbirds / @shinyamadaaa

    3. Petee’s Pie Company Almond Chess Pie

If fruity pies aren’t your thing, Petee’s Pie Company has got you covered. While their cherry crumb and blueberry pies are fantastic, that’s not what you’re here for. No, you’re here for a slice of one of their chess pies, available in almond, chocolate, salty (!) chocolate, lemon poppyseed, and even sesame varieties. Our favorite is the Almond Chess Pie, with a crisp top of layered almonds that gives way to a gooey, buttery custard. Here’s a tip: order it black bottom and get a thin layer of dark chocolate ganache at the bottom.

    4. Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies Key Lime Pie (obviously)

Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies takes it back to the basics with a key lime pie made from only five ingredients: fresh key lime, condensed milk, egg yolks, graham crackers, and butter. They don’t sell slices, so order a mini pie or bring some friends and split a whole one (or eat it by yourself, we won’t judge). When it gets warmer out, opt for a Swingle, a chocolate-dipped mini key lime pie served on a stick.

    Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie / @deargracie

    5. Butter & Scotch S’mores Pie

Butter & Scotch’s S’mores Pie definitely lives up to its name. With its sticky scorched marshmallow, smooth chocolate custard, and graham cracker crust, it’s essentially just a giant s’more. Which isn’t a bad thing. If a slice isn’t enough, you can also order any slice of pie as a milkshake, blended with your choice of ice cream.

Spare yourself the trek to Brooklyn and order one here.

5 Best Peanut Butter Desserts in NYC

In honor of National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day and the beginning of National Peanut Butter Month, we’ve compiled a list of the best peanut butter desserts in New York City.

    1. Levain Bakery Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip

With lines curling around the block, clearly everyone and their mother knows about Levain’s gooey fist-sized chocolate chip cookies. But did you know that they come in dark chocolate peanut butter, too? Nah didn’t think so.

Brave the line or get one delivered right to your doorstep here.

    Levain Bakery / @chow_chick

    2. Doughnut Plant Peanut Butter and Jelly Doughnut

With its oozing, tart black berry jam center, eating one of these will definitely leave you with some shirt stains. But honestly, we’d eat Doughnut Plant’s pillowy peanut-studded yeast doughnuts plain, so we’re not going to complain. There’s also a banana cream filled version for all you Elvis lovers out there.

    Doughnut Plant / @mrsropersmusings

    3. Billy’s Bakery Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie

Pure peanut butter fluff in a graham cracker crust with a peanut rim, topped with peanut butter cups and a chocolate drizzle. It doesn’t get better than this.

Treat yourself to a slice (or five) for yourself here.

    Billys Bakery / @Mike Chau

    4. Butter & Scotch Trifecta Pie

Oh wait, it might! Brooklyn’s boozy Butter & Scotch Bakery kicks it up a notch with the addition of salted pretzel to their dark chocolate peanut butter pie, lovingly dubbed the ‘Trifecta.’

Spare yourself the subway ride to Brooklyn and get a slice here.

    Butter & Scotch / @sweetistco

    5. Peanut Butter & Co Peanut Butters

Okay, so it’s not technically a dessert, but nothing’s really stopping you from eating an entire jar of any of Peanut Butter & Co’s flavored peanut butters with a spoon. Our personal favorite is the Bee’s Knees, a peanut butter blended with honey (!!!). With flavors from chile to cinnamon raisin, and a slew of other nut butters, there’s something for everyone.

La Newyorkina: Best Paletas in NYC

This month’s Dessert Spotlight features a new addition to Sweetist: La Newyorkina, the Mexican paleteria/ice creamery/all things Mexican dessert shop run by Fany Gerson, also head of the Dough donut empire. While La Newyorkina’s carts and its refreshing paletas have been a feature of New York City summers since 2010, its first brick-and-mortar location in West Village has only been open a few months.

The shop features an expanded menu, including not only its famed paletas, but also other frozen desserts, like handmade nieves de garrafa or helados, and other Mexican confections. And with a portion of their profits going to Crea, an organization based in Mexico that helps women from low-income households create and run small businesses, La Newyorkina is truly redefining the term “guilt-free dessert.”

Head over to La Newyorkina to try some of these frozen treats, or learn how to make your own with Fany’s upcoming book, Mexican Ice Cream: Beloved Recipes and Stories (preorder here).

    Our Picks:

    Nieves de Garrafa

Nieves de Garrafa is a hand-paddled water-based sorbet that Gerson describes as “custard in its purest form” is handmade in store daily. Flavors rotate everyday, but our favorites are the mango (pictured below) and the queso fresco, a soft Mexican cheese.

    La Newyorkina / @lycynthialy

    Horchata Ice Cream

With flavors ranging from pumpkin seed brittle to corn, horchata might not be the most creative flavor on the menu, but does that really matter when it’s this good? La Newyorkina’s horchata is creamy, but not overly so, with bits of cinnamon and sugar providing some much needed grit (pictured below with scoops of the coco-choco, a fresh coconut cream with dark chocolate bits, and the Oaxacan chocolate).

    La Newyorkina / @lanewyorkina

Available for delivery in hand-packed pints here.

    Paletas (duh)

While you can’t go wrong with any of La Newyorkina’s paletas, from either fruity or creamy, or even a blend of both, our favorites are the canela and cajeta, a Mexican cinnamon ice encasing an oozing cajeta, or goat caramel, filling and the equally gooey fresa con crema (are you sensing a theme yet?), a strawberry paleta with a condensed milk center (both pictured below).

    Pumpkin Pie 10

According to an interview with Bon Appetit, Sarah Jessica Parker only trusts Little Pie Company for her Thanksgiving pies!

"really, really, really love pumpkin pie. I didn’t think I was a pie person, but we have been buying our pies at a place in New York called the Little Pie Company for 10 or 15 years. I have a niece who loves their sour cream apple walnut pie so we get that because we’re very fond of her, but the truth is we get way too many pumpkin pies and we can’t fit them anywhere. We put them on the floor of the laundry room or in the back of a minivan where it’s cold. We put them outside because they don’t fit in the fridge, and we eat the pies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My daughter, Tabitha, goes crazy for them."
